On this page, you will find important information about passports and visa requirements, which you need to know before travelling.

For Nordic citizens

When travelling to Greenland, you must be able to present a valid photo ID – for example, a driving license. However, we always recommend bringing your passport. You will need to show a valid ID at check-in, at the security checkpoint and before boarding your flight. Citizens from the Nordic countries do not need a visa to enter Greenland.

For EU citizens

Travellers from European Union countries must be able to present a valid passport. EU citizens do not need a visa to enter Greenland.

Citizens from other countries

If you are travelling from a country with a visa requirement for entering Denmark, then you also need a visa to enter Greenland. Please note that you must apply for a separate visa to Greenland. If you do not have a valid visa, you may be denied entry. If you are unsure about which rules apply to you, please contact the Danish Immigration Service.

Greenland is not a member of the EU or party to the Schengen Agreement

A visa for entry to Denmark or another Schengen country is not valid for entry to Greenland. Greenland is not a member of the European Union or party to the Schengen Agreement. This means that even if you are a citizen of a country with a visa requirement and have a Schengen visa, you must still apply for a separate visa to enter Greenland.

Travelling from Greenland

When travelling from Greenland, you should check the passport and visa requirements of your destination country. Please note that the authorities in Greenland are not able to issue visas for other countries requiring visas. For more information about passport and visa requirements for other countries, visit the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

Worth remembering about passports and visas

Remember to check that your passport is valid. Some countries require that your passport is valid for at least 6 moths beyond the duration of your stay. This may also apply when you are in transit – that is, even when you just have a layover in the country on your way to your final destination.

If you need a visa, remember to apply well in advance of your departure date as the administration time may be long.

Travelling abroad as a Danish citizen? We recommend you add your name to the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs list of Danish citizens abroad. That way it will be easier for the Ministry to help you in case of a crisis situation.
